Join this Fall plant walk exploring the often underappreciated era of the plant world.
Most people only notice nature when it’s putting on a show. But beyond the bright colors of peak season lies a far more interesting world of hidden botanical design, historical remedies, and survival strategies.
Some of the most intriguing details — from strange leaf patterns to wild plants used for medicines, improvised tools and everyday life — persist even after most flowers fade.
Join RCIScience for a relaxed, guided walk from the Wilket Creek Recreational Trail to the Toronto Botanical Garden. We’ll brush up on some basic plant facts then dive straight into the weird, practical, and hidden history of the native (and invasive) flora right under our feet. Expect a casual pace, plenty of "wait, what is that?" moments, and a fresh look at the landscape you usually walk right past.
What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes and a healthy dose of curiosity.

About the Speakers
Andreea Bosorogan
(she/her)
Andreea is a PhD candidate at the University of Toronto, investigating how plants protect themselves against insect pests. Beyond the lab, Andreea loves exploring the outdoors and is an avid science communicator. She aspires to show people that plants are fun through outreach events for elementary students and diverse audiences. Osmond is a MSc student at the University of Toronto Scarborough, where he researches the relationship between leaf shape and heat tolerance in urban agricultural crops. He had been utterly entranced by the plant world in eighth grade, and has been pursuing botany ever since. You may find him hunched over a patch of wildflowers, with a plant dichotomous key in one hand, and a notebook in the other. When he's indoors, he enjoys playing both boardgames and videogames, as well as writing poetry.

Wear comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for the weather and terrain. The walking pace will be gentle and there will be extended periods of standing.
