Shoot lasers at rocks for science with Cissy Suen, who’ll be taking over our Instagram account to share her research on quantum materials!

Cissy studies quantum materials using photoemission spectroscopy or, in other words, she shoots light at rocks! As a joint doctoral candidate between the Quantum Matter Institute at the University of British Columbia and the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany, she looks at a material called Ca2RuO4. This crystal has the unique ability to go from an insulator to a conductor when you send an electrical current through it. So what are the quantum mechanics behind this phenomenon? 🤔
