Who are your superstars of science communication in Canada?

The 2021 Fleming Medal for Excellence in Science Communication goes to health journalist and author André Picard for his outstanding contributions to public health and medicine reporting in Canada, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2019 Fleming Medal for Excellence in Science Communication goes to journalist, author and broadcaster, Dan Falk.

The 2020 Fleming Medal for Excellence in Science Communication goes to Professor Timothy Caulfied for his tireless work addressing questionable health advice spread through popular culture and for inspiring other Canadian scientists to do the same.

RCIScience was sad to learn of the passing of Peter Calamai, 2007 Fleming Medal winner. Peter was recognized with this award for his contributions to public understanding of science in Canada as the National science writer for the Toronto Star.

Penny Park, 2014 Fleming Medal Winner passes away. We remember Penny as a friend and adviser to the RCIScience Program Committee. She made vital contributions to science journalism in Canada. In her words, “Media abhors a vacuum, and when experts are not readily available, that vacuum can be filled with unreliable information.” She tried to fill that vacuum through all of her work, but especially with the Science Media Centre of Canada.

RCIScience awards the 2018 Fleming Medal to Dr. John Smol of Queen’s University. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to the public understanding of science by a Canadian.
