Healthy Yards 101: Idea Spark

  • Waterloo Public Library - Main Library 35 Albert Street Waterloo, ON, N2L 5E2 Canada (map)

This evening's event will proceed as planned, however, please note we will be suspending our refreshment service to comply with Health Canada's guidelines for limiting the risk of infection during public gatherings.

In Southern Ontario, climate change is bringing heavier and more frequent rainstorms. As we learned in last year's talk on Canada's Climate Adaptation Gap: Reducing Flood Risk, rapid water flow over hard surfaces leads to flash flooding and stress on municipal water systems. It is possible to mitigate these risks by greening our own outdoor spaces. The right mix of science, landscaping and plants can help capture water and prevent fast runoff.

Be inspired by some dramatic before, during and after photos from gardeners who are turning their spaces into rain gardens and other rain-smart landscape features. Then, in a hands-on workshop, take that inspiration and start to plan your own project to create a beautiful and natural, rain-smart space for people and wildlife. You will leave the workshop with a basic plan and additional resources to help implement your healthy yard project.

Delivered in partnership with Reep Green Solutions. Reep Green Solutions is an environmental charity that helps people live sustainably. Their mission is to empower the community with the practical tools, knowledge and capacity for action to make sustainable living the norm.
